The Nigerian Army has issued a strong caution against the irresponsible use of social media to spread harmful content that could undermine national security and peaceful coexistence.
Speaking at the 38th Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar in Lokoja, themed “Cultivating a Culture of Security Awareness Through Social Media,” Major General A.A. Ayanuga, Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, highlighted the dual-edged nature of social media. While it offers opportunities for connection, its misuse—through misinformation, hate speech, and divisive narratives—poses significant threats to national stability.
Major General N.C. Ugbo also emphasized social media’s critical role in asymmetric warfare, calling for its responsible use to counter harmful narratives and foster unity.
Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ododo, represented by Commodore Jerry Omodara, echoed these sentiments, urging citizens, especially the youth, to verify information, identify credible sources, and prioritize national peace in their online interactions.
The seminar stressed that while social media has immense potential for good, its misuse can escalate tensions, making responsible usage a collective duty for all Nigerians.
